About this deal

Pacific Image Electronics sells a line of film scanners that are advertised to scan at a world-beating 10,000 dpi. After installing the software I experienced subsequent app freezes and hardware stalls; none of which I could identify a solution for. An experience designer, freelance photographer, and competitive cyclist living in San Jose, California with his wife, three sons, and neurotic bernese mountain dog.

There is no firewire card provided with the scanner, so check whether your computer has the necessary support before you get too excited! Tapping the physical ⏮ and ⏭ on PrimeFilm XA will move the film by about a millimetre in either direction.I guess the stumbling block is adding a decent lens and the mechanism to accurately and reliably step a large area of film in 1/4000" increments. But despite its shotty build quality, there seems to be no better alternative for scanning 35mm film at home. I've been sitting here at my desk all day scanning 35mm negatives and realizing that the quality just isn't there.

When I installed, I first installed VueScan, which installed the tested VueScan Driver for the Nikon Scanner.

I use an LED light panel to illuminate my film, then a Leica SL full frame digital camera to take a photo of the film at 1:1, using a Schneider Kreuznach Componon S 50mm enlarging lens and extension tubes. If you are thinking about looking into another of the Pacific/Reflecta scanners, the list below should help, but I can save you time. It even includes all of the scanner adapters you need for 35mm film, mounted slides, and medium-format negatives. To check the size of the image you are looking at, look up at the URL window at the top of the browser, the address should have 1 500w at the end. Digital noise reduction- Isolate and manage noise/grain in both highlight and shadow areas without sacrificing image detail. I wrote an e-mail to Pacific Image asking when they will sell it in Europe and whether it is going to be branded by Reflecta, but never got an answer.A4 scanning takes around 12 seconds, while 35mm negative scanning is almost a minute long (at 4800 dpi).
