About this deal

Depending on how your polyester was treated in the first place, you can use a color remover to essentially strip the fabric of color to create a blank canvas that you can dye a different color later on. Because of this, polyester is very difficult to dye because it naturally won’t absorb the dye very well. If the dye isn’t specially formulated to work with synthetic fabrics, the colors won’t show up well, and the result isn’t permanent.

It’s easy enough to understand that a red shirt in a blue dye bath will result in a purple shirt, but what happens if you’re not starting with a primary color, or when there’s not a clear mix available? Unfortunately, there’s no magical overdye color that will help you turn a pair of dark brown pants neon yellow. In general, overdyeing only allows you to go darker, not lighter, and you’re always going to be limited by the color of the garment or fabric you’re starting with. If you’re set on a lighter color, you can always pre-treat your fabric or garment with bleach to lighten it, but do keep in mind that bleach can damage fabric in large quantities so always test a swatch first!Use copper to give your end result a greenish tint. Make a copper bath with a few old pennies (from before 1982) in boiling water, or buy copper sulfate online. Copper is toxic to consume, so don't use a pot that you use for cooking and work in a well-ventilated area. The garment will need to be clean and wet before you dye it, so either put it through the wash or hand-wash it. Then you will need to fill your washing machine or plastic tub with the advised quantity of water, pour in the respective amount of dye, add a fixative such as salt or vinegar (depending on the fabric) and submerge your clothes in the water.

Let’s take a look at how to dye your polyester fabric in different colors below. How To Dye Polyester Red It is possible to dye over patterned fabric, but the print itself may turn into unexpected colors, or stay the same color, depending on how it was printed. Before you try to remove a dye stain, spot-test your stain remover solution on a hidden area of the stained fabric. After that you will need to rinse the garment with warm water, followed by another wash cycle, before it is ready to be dried. Natural dyes Make sure that the fabric is thoroughly washed before you start dyeing. This process will remove any dirt, wax, or chemical residue left on the fabric, which can affect the result of the dye.You probably learned something about color mixing in school – red and blue make purple, yellow and blue make green, and the difference between primary and secondary colors. Dyes, like paints, are composed of pigments, and overdyeing is essentially just mixing pigments, the same way you’d mix paint. If your fabric has been printed or painted on, the color remover won’t be able to remove that either. How to dye Cotton or Linen (we recommend fiber-reactive dyes, but instructions for box dyes are also included)

If the dye stain was caused by a non-colourfast item in the load, make sure to remove that item and hang it to dry. Keep it separate from other clothing so it won’t stain again. How to dye fabric with natural dyes (the same mixing principles we’ve discussed here apply to natural dyes as well!) For example, if you want to dye a white polyester shirt pastel blue, you can follow the same steps mentioned above to prepare a dye bath with Rit Dyemore blue dye. Then, submerge your fabric in the dye bath and stir thoroughly, and remove your fabric after about 5 minutes in the dye bath. The dyeing process usually takes from 30 minutes to an hour. “So it can be a bit of a tedious experiment sitting over pot constantly stirring a garment,” she says. If you are unsure about whether this method will work, you can test it out on a scrap piece of fabric first before going ahead with using a color remover on your fabric. In general, if your garment requires delicate treatments and dry-cleaning, it should not be dyed with disperse dye, which usually requires boiling to set.
