Smart features are improved over the 2020 models as it’s compatible with both Alexa and Google Assistant. Advanced gaming features also feature on this model with ALLM and VRR on the spec sheet. The red of Deadpool’s costume in Deadpool looks vivid in the opening scene, without a hint of blueish tinting under the overcast lighting. The burning lab fight later in the film shows very bright flames and strong shadow detail, thanks to the TV’s contrast.

The Hisense U7QF wasn’t built with the PS5 or Xbox Series X in mind, so you won’t find High Frame Rate (4K/120Hz), Variable Refresh Rate or Auto Low Latency Mode. Game Mode needs to be turned on manually and when it is, input lag delivers a speedy 10.5ms. Hisense U7QF performance — Bright, colourful and detailed with the right settings HDR support intends to bring better depth, detail and contrast where possible, while Dolby Atmos audio delivers cinematic audio from the speakers embedded into the TV console, with sound coming from all directions. The TV also features the same X-Fusion technology found in the 100L9G-DLT100 for over 25000 hours of entertainment. The remote is a similar effort to previous and a slight improvement as it doesn’t attempt to cram as many buttons into a small space. Features You’re not going to get this level of performance from the bigger TV brands at this screen size or price.

With SDR content it fires on more cylinders. As is Hisense’s trademark, images are delivered with a strong sense of colour – primary colours have the look of children’s colouring book in how punchy they look. Complexions are warmly expressed (perhaps overcooked in some places) but it makes for an attention-grabbing image. Available in 50-, 55- and 65-inch models, the U7Q has an understated appearance. The bezel around the top and sides is thin, met by a discrete silver trim at the bottom. The chassis is made from plastic, and in terms of depth it’s surprisingly slim. The U-shaped central stand is made from aluminium, but it’s sturdy and supports the set well.

Disappointingly, there are fewer HDMI ports – three instead of four, but ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) are covered across all of them so you could plug a game console into any port and benefit from those features – though they are HDMI 2.0 ports, not 2.1 specified. eARC is supported on HDMI 2 for pass-through of lossless audio. Color performance is downright fantastic. The above chart shows color measurements using an SDR signal compared with Rec.709 broadcast standard color values, and using an HDR10 signal compared with DCI-P3 digital cinema color values, both using the Theater Day picture mode. In both cases, the U8G covers the respective color spaces with impressive accuracy out of the box. Only one color deviated significantly from its ideal levels, with magenta leaning quite red with an HDR10 signal, but all primary colors hit their marks nearly perfectly. Behind the display, the TV doesn’t protrude out much and lifting it isn’t too bad considering the U8G weighs under 60 pounds. Moving the TV out of the box to a table wasn’t difficult after screwing in the legs.

We should say right away, though, that the 65U8HQ also potentially undermines some of the Mini LED/local dimming picture quality promise by a) only supporting 160 separate dimming zones and b) using an IPS type of LCD panel. Some rival Mini LED TVs carry 500 local dimming zones and more (though many regular LED TVs carry far fewer dimming zones than 160), while IPS panels tend to struggle more with contrast than the alternative VA panel type. Many have praised Hisense's recent displays for their modern design philosophy, and that will likely continue with the U8G: the legs that extend out fairly far out to the sides and despite keeping the TV incredibly sturdy, this is definitely meant to be the centerpiece. Buyers who sit their televisions on top of furniture like dressers may have to put their space management skills to the test.
