About this deal

The arrival of two waves of Irish nuns, the Sisters of Mercy, to assist with nursing duties at Scutari met with different responses from Nightingale. Mary Clare Moore headed the first wave and placed herself and her Sisters under the authority of Nightingale. The two were to remain friends for the rest of their lives. [38] The second wave, headed by Mary Francis Bridgeman met with a cooler reception as Bridgeman refused to give up her authority over her Sisters to Nightingale while at the same time not trusting Nightingale, whom she regarded as ambitious. A new generation of Nightingales have been celebrated with a unique professional award at Guy’ at St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.

In addition to observing these historic and poignant processions, our 2,000 guests will hear reflections, biddings and prayers read by Officers and friends of the charity. On the 4 November 1854, Florence Nightingale arrived in Turkey with a group of 38 nurses from England. Britain was at war with Russia in a conflict called the Crimean War (1854-1856). The army base hospital at Scutari in Constantinople was unclean, poorly supplied with bandages and soap and the patients did not have proper food or medicine. Some historians believe Nightingale was personally asked to go to improve nursing for the wounded soldiers by the Secretary of State for War at the time, Sidney Herbert. Nightingale had been friends with Herbert for several years. Nursing wasn’t a highly regarded career in the early 1800s: Can pupils discover if their textbooks/topic books support what they have learnt from the original sources used in this lesson?Nightingale herself suffered in the line of duty. During the war, she came down with Crimean Fever, or brucellosis. “Had it not been for Nightingale being nursed herself, there would be no Nightingale story,” says Anne Marie. “She owed her life to one nurse in particular.” Statistical pioneer Project Nightingale is part of the UK government’s response to the pandemic. Seven hospitals for COVID-19 patients have been announced, all named after Nightingale. “Like the new hospitals, Scutari was a pop-up field hospital,” says David. “It's a reminder about the need to improvise but provide the best possible care you can under those improvised circumstances.” A BBC documentary reported that "Florence and her older sister Parthenope benefited from their father's advanced ideas about women's education. They studied history, mathematics, Italian, classical literature, and philosophy, and from an early age Florence, who was the more academic of the two girls, displayed an extraordinary ability for collecting and analysing data which she would use to great effect in later life." Some scholars of Nightingale's life believe that she remained chaste for her entire life, perhaps because she felt a religious calling to her career. [66] Death The grave of Florence Nightingale in the churchyard of StMargaret's Church, East Wellow, Hampshire Do we do them a disservice, dismissing them as not being ‘real’ nurses because they practiced before Florence? Nightingale wrote Notes on Nursing (1859). The book served as the cornerstone of the curriculum at the Nightingale School and other nursing schools, though it was written specifically for the education of those nursing at home. Nightingale wrote, "Every day sanitary knowledge, or the knowledge of nursing, or in other words, of how to put the constitution in such a state as that it will have no disease, or that it can recover from disease, takes a higher place. It is recognised as the knowledge which every one ought to have – distinct from medical knowledge, which only a profession can have". [45] In September 2017, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust launched the Trust’s new professional award: the Nightingale Nurse Award.Historically, nurses who trained at St Thomas’ Hospital were known as ‘Nightingales’ and received a Nightingale badge on completion of their training. Prior to May 2018, the badge had last been awarded in 1996, before the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing moved to King’s College London. 1 THE NIGHTINGALE NURSE AWARD Why did you want to become a nurse? I wanted to become a nurse because my siblings and I had the privilege to care for our aged, grandparents who had dementia and cancer until their death. I also had an Aunt who died from a mental health-related illness. Due to the above, I wanted to do something that is challenging and that would make a difference in people’s lives. I am a naturally caring, curious person and I wanted to use this attitude in helping people to the best of my abilities. I have always had the innate desire to help people and care for them in times of need. I’m also blessed to have a wonderful mother from whom I learned so much. My mother is very caring and generous in her love for others, and caring for their needs. The ceremony took place virtually on International Nurses’ Day, with messages of support and inspiration from Ruth May, Chief Nursing Officer for England, Rabbi Baroness Julia Neuberger DBE, and Gillian Prager, President of The Nightingale Fellowship. Fiona Hibberts, Co-Head of the Nightingale Academy, said: “A huge congratulations to all our Nightingale Nurses and Nightingale Midwives who have achieved this prestigious recognition during such a challenging time. Nursing Clio, an academic blog community sharing feminist histories of health and medicine, published a series of articles in response, under the title ‘Beyond Florence’. They argued that there is an important history of nursing before and after Florence Nightingale, which should be given more recognition.
