The Valiant grape that Mark mentions is a second generation hybrid based on the Beta grape, a cross between the Concord and the Riverbank grape and will flourish in our area. Antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs have been the major players in their clinical setting [ 1, 2]. Although their efficacy is well established, their deleterious, life-threatening side-effects have also been well documented [ 3, 4] which has prompted investigations into natural alternatives. An exploratory trial to identify new anticoagulants and anti-platelets sourced from medicinal plants is worthwhile. Plants are a good source for isolating natural compounds without unfavorable side effects, capable of inhibiting coagulation pathway enzymes and reducing blood platelet activation [ 5, 6, 7]. Epidemiological studies have provided evidence that diets rich in polyphenols, such as flavonoids, protect against vascular dysfunction, promote vascular health and reduce the risk of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases [ 8, 9, 10]. Polyphenol-rich diets have also been shown to have a positive effect on the vascular system, mainly through their effects on platelets and endothelial functions [ 11, 12].

Since its inception, Columbia Falls has always been a hard-working Montana town. The closures of the aluminum plant in 2009 and sale of Plum Creek Mill in 2016 did not change that spirit of hard work, but they did impact generations of Montanans whose livelihoods depended on these industries.
