BE JUST AND FEAR NOT

My biro has long since ‘dried-up’ but I keep it as a memento of that occasion when we were honoured to have President Robinson unveil a plaque on the building. Another point I have observed is that some verses are fear-related, but it is more indirect than literally saying “do not fear.” This poses the question, how far can we take this? There are probably lots of Bible verses that somehow indirectly also have a connection to fear, or cast fear in a bad light (e.g. narrative that shows us a character getting into a bad situation because of fear). Isaiah 12:2 – Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.’

I don’t want to hurt your feelings or insult you, but that fact that God told us certain things over and over in many different ways tends to tell us this was very important to God to make us understand. Matthew 6:25 alone makes it pretty clear God doesn’t want us to worry, be afraid, be troubled, be alarmed, etc. about anything and we wouldn’t if we have faith. There are over 100 synonyms for ‘worry’. Of course ‘Fear the Lord’ is extremely important but no one was talking about fearing the Lord, they’re plainly talking about how many times God told us not to do this. He also told us many times in many ways to seek Him and we will find Him. He also taught us over and over in many ways about the sanctity of human life: Deuteronomy 7:18 – But do not be afraid of them; remember well what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and to all Egypt.

Luke 1:13 – But the angel said to him: ‘Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to call him John.’
