About this deal

I did :) I don't usually buy shorter listen audio books but knowing this story, I decided I'd spend a credit on it anyway. Now I don't have enough listens for the month :D There are over 40 books in the Discworld series, of which four are written for children. The first of these, The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents, won the Carnegie Medal. This was not what I expected it to be, and that's the fault of the German translation who uses "Nomen" for the nomes - which means noun. The name of the trilogy is Nomenklature which is a grammatical term. Don't know how they work with it, as I waited all these years to read the original version. A sad ću morati otvoriti vrata barem jednom.

For thousands of years, nomes have lived on Earth, hiding in the walls and floors, the bushes and scrub brush. Their sense of time is much faster than humans who are slow and clumsy to them (and very big), and speak like records on the wrong speed (though one would think that nomes sound like records on too high a speed for the human ear). Thousands of nomes have lived in The Store, Arnold Bros. (est. 1905). They have food and clothing, books (though few nomes can read), central air and heat, and even religion. The nomes in The Store never go Outside. They no longer believe that an Outside even exists, just Arnold Bros. (est. 1905), who built The Store for them. The Store nomes don’t believe what is so readily apparent to the reader: they live in a microcosm. A Bright New Dawn is just around the corner for thousands of tiny nomes when they move into the ruined buildings of an abandoned quarry. Or is it? Soon strange things begin to happen. Then humans appear and they really mess everything up. The quarry is to be re-opened, and the nomes must fight to defend their new home. But how long will they be able to keep the humans at bay -

This book is the first in a series of three books and was recommended to me by her and she said, "You are going to love these." She was absolutely right. While reading the whole time I kept thinking I want to write books like these. Forget the huge daunting novel. How about a short, quirky, hilarious, and fun short series for older kids? I think I can do that. Pratchett lived with his wife and daughter in Broad Chalke, a village situated west of Salisbury, in Wiltshie. He got married to his wife Lyn in 1968 and their daughter who has followed her father’s footsteps to become an author as well, was born to them in 1967. He wrote and published over fifty books. A number of them have been adopted into television programmes for children. He has also received many accolades due to his great works. For instance, in the year 2008 he was knighted in the loyal 2009 New Years Honours which is a testimony of his influence in the fiction world. I still remember visiting old department stores. Just as the nomes believed there was literally everything under one roof. Granny Morkie – a fearsome, elderly outside Nome. She is also Torrit's wife and a healer, of sorts.

Masklin tells his plan to a number of officials from other clans. The Duke thinks his plan is foolishness, and refuses to participate. All the other clans agree to work together, with the Stationeri (reluctantly) teaching many of the nomes to read. Angalo defies his father by offering to help, and climbs aboard a departing lorry, hoping to learn more about how they work. Gurder presides over the Abbott's funeral, and it is revealed that he was chosen by the old Abbott to replace him. Gurder, however, does not want the job. Masklin comes up with a plan to save the nomes; they will leave the way they arrived, by stealing a lorry.

The Bromeliad" was used as the title for the collected trilogy in the US, as well as some UK editions. It refers to the story told by Grimma in Diggers that some species of small frogs live their entire lives inside the flowers of epiphytic bromeliad plants, which is a metaphor used for the Nomes' experience throughout the books. The frogs themselves appear in Wings. The name is also a pun on The Iliad and, according to the Annotated Pratchett File, The Belgariad.

So this time it was Nomes. Nomes in a human world that think Arnold Bros (est. 1905) is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Ejected from the Duke's presence, the Outsiders wander the underfloor corridors until 'The Thing' is accidentally dropped next to an electrical cable, where it starts to recharge itself. 'The Thing' then powers up and identifies itself as the navigational computer of the Galactic Survey Starship 'Swan'; the ship developed an engine fault many thousands of years ago, and marooned its Nome crew on Earth. When it asks its primary mission, Masklin tells it to keep the Nomes safe and get them home. The thing tells them that Nomes are from another planet, that they arrived on earth 15,000 years ago, and that they must return home to their planet. Masklin meets Dorcas, an inventor who shows them his inventions and is intrigued by the concept of 'Life beyond The Store'. The Thing intercepts a radio transmission saying The Store will be demolished in three weeks. When the Abbott is alone with Masklin, he says that he has a number of concerns about the future of the Store. The Abbott reveals that, many years ago, the different departments fought each other for control of the Store. It was only when the Sationeri asserted that Arnold Bros. (est 1905) wanted the departments to live in peace that the wars ended. If the Stationeri is proved wrong about the existence of Outside, the other departments may decide they were wrong about Arnold Bros. too, and start fighting again. Therefore the Abbott must pretend that everything is normal to keep the peace. The Thing then tells the Abbott the true history of the Nomes, starting with their spaceship crash-landing on earth 15,000 years ago. Masklin the Nome and his companions flee their unsustainable motorway-verge home and discover an alien race of tiny Humans known as Nomes living in a department store scheduled for demolition. Things are complicated by the store Nomes' religion, which states 'The Store' consists of the entire universe, and denies the existence of the 'outside'. It was always a good idea, he said, to be good at something other people couldn’t or didn’t want to do.” Richard Arnold – called "Grandson Richard, 39" by Gurder, also appears briefly in Diggers. He is loosely based on Richard Branson.
