About this deal

Myron and Win continue their efforts to bring Rhys home and discover some surprising information along the way. I don't want to give away spoilers so I'll just say there's A LOT of murder and mayhem in the story, and Myron and Win get to show off plenty of their combat skills. Harlan Coben wins the 4th RBA Prize for Crime Writing with his novel 'Live Wire' ". Catalan News Wire. September 10, 2010 . Retrieved September 13, 2013. Edgar Award Winners and Nominees in the Private Eye Genre". Thrilling Detective . Retrieved April 20, 2012. There are so many twists and turns. People lied. There were fibs, and there were whoppers. Some say that Paul lied and that his then girlfriend lied too. What is the real truth?

Should the past be left in the past? Is it better to know the truth? Should we learn the secrets of others? What will someone do to protect the ones that they love? The book can be at times predictable with twists and turns that are too telegraphed and relies heavily on clichés and tropes of the thriller genre. It can even feel derivative of other crime novels and movies, and the characters and situations are not all particularly original or surprising. In 2023, the Japanese edition of Win, translated by Toshiki Taguchi, was nominated for the Mystery Writers of Japan Award for Mystery Fiction in Translation. [21] [22] Films and TV series [ edit ]

From Coben’s first Myron Bolitar thriller, Deal Breaker, in 1995, introducing a hero that would captivate millions. Did a Ghost Writer do this one? The dialogue between FBI Agents is ridiculous and get ready for word fillers galore! Want to know every burger on the menu? No worries you’ll get them all. Things get regurgitated like he was 5 years in prison, yep we got that the first time. I cannot believe so many reviewers are giving this 5 stars. According to some reviewers he pulls off a disaster now and then so I think this is one of those. We always seem to be on the eve of destruction. And we always seem to get through it. Maybe we all survive the destruction we have wrought.”

Coben has done it again with this fast-paced, smart thriller.”— Library Journal(starred review) on Fool Me Once

This is shown as #11 in the Myron Bolitar series. I have read several of Harlan Coben's books and have enjoyed them but this is the first Myron Bolitar book I have read. It won't be the last. Gotta love finding a new series to read. Having said that I don't think it is necessary to have read previous books in the series. There were some references to past events and these may be explained in previous books in the series but I don't think I got lost or missed something because I didn't read an earlier book. Win's first rescue attempt goes south, so he calls Myron for help. Myron flies to London and meets up with an unsavory character called Fat Gandhi - a computer gamer who also runs a child prostitute ring. After graduating in 1984, Coben worked in the travel industry, in a company owned by his grandfather. [5] [7] It was during that time when he wrote his first book, romantic suspense thriller Play Dead, which was accepted for publication when he was 26 and released in 1990. [7] It was followed by Miracle Cure in 1991. He then began writing a series of thrillers featuring a former basketball player turned sports agent, Myron Bolitar, who often finds himself investigating murders involving his clients. The police couldn't figure out what happened. The family's au pair was found tied up, and there was no trace of the boys. After one attempt to collect ransom from the grieving families, nothing was heard again. The media attention died down, leaving the Baldwins and the Moores in pain, wondering where their sons might be, and trying desperately to never give up hope that one day they'll return, even if they know the odds diminish more and more every year.

Although these are thrillers with sensitive subjects at the heart, you always feel extremely comfortable reading this author's many books, feeling like you know the characters personally. I LOVE Myron's and Win's relationship, they work so well together and they really are a pleasure to read. The fact that they are like chalk and cheese makes the partnership all the more entertaining and I don't know of any other crime busting duo that works so well by another author.

Meet Nikki

Yet had Coben not imbued his character with such a disdain for women dressed as adoration and with such a paternalistic attitude towards non-white people, The Woods would still be pretty awful for the writing, which is awkward and uninspired; worse, whenever Coben tries to say something remotely witty, it comes out sounding like this: He studied political science at Amherst College, where he was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity, along with Dan Brown. [5] [6] Coben was in his senior year at college when he realized he wanted to write. [7] Career [ edit ] Also I wish Harlan had kept his political rants to himself. The "characters" would go on these tangents about random issues (ie, is shutting down frats bc of repeated rape fair? Dr. Lucy Gold, PhD in Psychology believes no!!!) that felt more like somebody's drunk uncle at Christmas ranting about "those damn illegals" after you shared pics of your trip from Mexico. Coben clearly has a set formula on how to write a successful thriller, which he maximises in his latest book. As soon as I opened Home I felt like I had to read on and I wasn’t quite sure where this book was going to take me. Despite not knowing what to expect, I found Home to be an exciting tale, travelling at a fast pace. Coben obviously loves to deliver unexpected narrative twists. One of these twists occurs near the close of the novel and threw me for six, turning the central mystery of this novel on its head. Coben, Harlan (November 5, 2009). "Chris Christie Confidential".
