About this deal

But the most unexpected surprise is when Nell strikes up a friendship with an eighty something year old widow whose husband she’s writing an obituary piece about. As someone who is forty without the husband and children I’d always thought I’d have (and no real prospects on the horizon), I thought I’d finally found something I could relate to. An editor, Nell secured a job with an old colleague crafting epilogues, and this is how she found a firm friend in Cricket, a newly widowed octogenarian. It seems that actually they do not see their future invested in the same things and break off their engagement. It’s a story about learning to love yourself a little later in life and realising that there is still so much life left to live even when you feel like the best years have gone.

Plenty of the pages made me laugh and smile, and there were a lot of interesting issues raised within the story. Thankfully Nell has Cricket by her side to help her through as well as her friends, but they're each dealing with their own issues. The story of Nell Stevens’ struggle through her imperfect, messy life doesn’t just make brilliant fiction, it’s turning into a cultural revolution! Nell's housemate or landlord, Edward only stays at the house few days a week as he is married and has kids and visits them in the country over the weekends.

All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house and in a world of perfect instagram lives, she feels like a f ck up. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series , I have to say this was an even better and funnier read.

When her business goes bust and her fiancé with it, Nell's happily-ever-after in California falls apart and she moves back to London to start over. Yorkshire born and raised, Alex currently lives in South-West London with Mr California and their Bosnian rescue dog and when she’s not spending time writing or travelling, she’s spending far too much time on Instagram being reminded that she should be exercising regularly, drinking enough water, practising mindfulness and feeling blessed. I'm seeing more stories focus on a friendship between those in their seventies or eighties and someone two or three decades younger and I'm loving it. We could all do with a hearty laugh right now and I knew this chunk of a rom-com would satisfy that need. Very enjoyable and entertaining book with the telling of life how it is with none of us achieving perfection or things turning out as we may have planned. The four men think about work and creativity and success and failure; they cook for each other, compete with each other and jostle for each other’s affection.

You could read it as a standalone book, as the beginning does a great recap of book one, yet there's loads more new content to laugh at and enjoy. I can't imagine how hard it would be to have your dream little business and a great relationship and then *wham* everything blows up. They were going to get married, have babies, and spend the rest of their lives together, until they weren’t. More of all the fabulous characters plus some delightful new ones, this book is funny and moving in equal measure.Secondly, always remember that the family will always end up with you when you had nobody to look for. This is a used book - there is no escaping the fact it has been read by someone else and it will show signs of wear and previous use. Michaelides seems also to be dipping into the world of Edgar Allan Poe, offering an unreliable narrator who feels more like a literary exercise.
