About this deal

And whenever there’s a drop in quality because of the original techniques used or the early CGI, it emboldens just how great the overall presentation looks. HDR makes some of the shifts slightly more balanced, but the replacement of blues and grays with cyan throughout the film remains easy to identify. The reproduction, modification, distribution, or republication of the content without permission is strictly prohibited. If The Matrix broke new ground for movies everywhere, The Brotherhood of the Wolf picked up the pieces and found fun, reflexive ways to play with them all the while telling a good story. As Fronsac and Mani investigate the incidents around the area, they become inclined to believe that this ‘beast’ is far from the large wolf many claim it to be and it may, in fact, have a human owner controlling its actions. The film has costume design by Dominic Borg (which won him the 2002 César), a sumptuous score by Joseph LoDuca (Emmy winner for Xena: Warrior Princess), and gorgeous cinematography by Dan Lausten (Oscar-nominated for The Shape of Water).Amongst them are: Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001), The Haunting (1999), and The Morning After (1986).

It's a rich palette too, enjoying those period trappings, from the muddy, rainy hell of the introduction, to the lavish interiors, crimson red garbs, with inky black levels and some spectacular attention to the flaming torches that light several sequences. On the whole though, the film is a handsome, rousing adventure that may be shallow but still manages to be a thoroughly entertaining watch.

La Legend - in this archival program, author Michel Louis discusses the origin and mystique of The Beast. Brotherhood of the Wolf, one of the most financially successful French films of all time, is a beautiful blend of elements from a half a dozen different genres, brought together perfectly under the guide of imaginative Director Christophe Gans, whose stylish excesses actually work wonders for this cross-bred hybrid. As the story develops, and the investigations continue, everything only appears to be further enshrouded in mystery – not just the strange beast, but even the impossible-to-read women who De Fronsac becomes involved with: the first, the chaste daughter of an aristocrat, who he seeks to woo; the second, ostensibly just a high-class lady-of-the-night, although her true motivations and involvement in the underbelly of this society are a mystery in and of themselves. Director Gans went on to make the 2006 video game adaptation Silent Hill (which he is currently working on a sequel to), and a live action version of Beauty and the Beast in 2014 (starring Vincent Cassel). However, there have been some notable lycanthropic tales between then and now, such as Neil Jordan’s haunting The Company of Wolves, the fun Jack Nicholson romp Wolf and the sleazy genius of Howling II: Your Sister is a Werewolf (honestly, go treat yourself), but putting 2014s excellent Late Phases to one side, the 21st century has been relatively void of anything approaching the quality of the previous two decades when it comes to werewolves and their like.I was riding that wave too, back then, hoovering up any kung-fu-heavy films I could find, newly discovering a great love of the martial arts genre. After a foreboding introductory sequence, set in the midst of the French Revolution, we flashback as the narrating character reflects on his fateful experiences from the preceding decades. The Guts of the Beast (2002) - a long and very interesting archival documentary, directed by Pascal Laugier ( Martyrs), which focuses on the various obstacles the creative team behind Brotherhood of the Wolf had to overcome.
