Bideford: The narrow streets of this busy Devon town, climb the steep hills on the western banks of the River Torridge, its famous Long Bridge over the river is 677 feet long and comprises twenty four arches, it originally dates from the 13th century. This map is actually a proof copy of one which forms part of Christopher Saxton’s Atlas of England and Wales.

When you are in Devon, you will find that the jagged coastlines of the north and south of the county are beautifully juxtaposed by the rugged inland areas of Exmoor and Dartmoor and perfectly placed towns and villages. The decorative scale bar houses the name of Saxton and of the Flemish engraver Remigius Hogenberg who prepared the copper plate for this map. It's rivers are the Tame, Exe, Plym, Torridge, Taw, Yalm, Otter, Oke, Dart Tavy, Aven, Erme, Culm, Teigne, Ax, and Loman. Exeter - Important since Roman times, Exeter (right in the centre of the Devon map) is situated on the River Exe in Devon, Exeter Cathedral was founded in 1050.
