Connecting with desktop computer, it can be used separately; But if with laptop computer, please connect to electrical outlet or use a 48V phantom power supply to make the sound much clearer and higher. When using the XLR to XLR cable with the BM800 power needs to be supplied from a source that provides what is commonly refereed to as 'phantom' and does some magic internally to regulate/reduce the 48 volts to what its electronics uses.

MAYBE the boards might fit other similarly sized mics, but i'll leave that up to others to find out, if they're curious (Apex 480 perhaps? This means plugging it into a device that doesn’t provide some kind of power (aka my laptop, my phone, even my kids’ desktop computer) won’t work. I’m building the Alice boards using through-hole components, so I needed a little more real estate than the original board provided. There are a few BM800 variants, some with only basic electronics inside as a "5V" or "Doesn’t need phantom power" specs, so it works when connected directly to your PC soundcard. I don't understand why this microphone isn't working with phantom power but its working with very little power.

Note that the microphone has no onboard adjustments – no power, volume, impedance adjustments – nothing. On the other hand, if you are a seasoned pro, please don't hesitate to jump in and offer your experience and wisdom.

Most any condenser mic needs some sort of 'phantom' to power the internal electronics (preamp) of the mic including an electret. If you are purchasing items for an event, please allocate an additional week for preparation and equipment testing. But the whole purpose of this exercise is to move beyond Primo all-in-one capsules and try my hand at building more complicated (and better performing!
