Sir Charles Hare, a young Irish baronet, gambles his all on one of his horses at Ascot. But the horse is 'pulled', and Sir Charles is forced to sell his Irish estate. His aunt, however, has some surprises in store for him. In the original novel, in the trial scene, which was based around the nursery rhyme "The Queen of Hearts made some tarts", Alice gave the testimony that she knew "Nothing whatever" about the events that took place when she was unexpectedly called as a witness. In the film, since Alice was the one on trial instead of the Knave of Hearts, her lines are given to the Hare. Mad as a March hare" is a common British English phrase, both now and in Carroll's time, and appears in John Heywood's collection of proverbs published in 1546. It is reported in The Annotated Alice by Martin Gardner that this proverb is based on popular belief about hares' behaviour at the beginning of the long breeding season, which lasts from February to September in Britain. Early in the season, unreceptive females often use their forelegs to repel overenthusiastic males. It used to be incorrectly believed that these bouts were between males fighting for breeding supremacy. [2] The March Hare never directly appears in the series; he and the Mad Hatter are trapped in a painting at their Tea Party Garden that offers small prizes for Sora and friends if they sit in the chair. A frequently villainous onscreen presence throughout the 1950s, Terence Morgan takes the more endearing role of an impoverished Irish baronet in this charming comedy set in the deceptively genteel world of horseracing. Co-scripted by Oscar-nominated writer Gordon Wellesley and boasting a venerable supporting cast, The March Hare is featured here in a brand-new transfer from the original film elements, in its as-exhibited theatrical aspect ratio.
