The band’s first album, 1978’s Outlandos d’Amour, basically had a recording budget of near zero, which forced the band to grab cheap time at Surrey Sound whenever it was convenient for the studio.

The pop-culture mythology about Zenyatta Mondatta is that you, Sting and Stewart didn’t really love the album, even though it finally broke The Police big in America and gave you two Top 10 singles: Don’t Stand So Close To Me and De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da . Is this alleged dislike myth, or truth? The other songs on the album range from should've been hits, to instrumentals showcasing The Police's great musical abilities. Songs like "Canary in a Coalmine" and "Man in a Suitcase" are so insanely infectious that they would have been huge had they been released as singles. As such, they are excellent gems on the album. The same goes for the likes of "When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around" and the Stewart Copeland penned "Bombs Away". "Driven to Tears" is probably the first of Sting's overly political songs, and it would not be his last. The song is driven by a great bassline and also features a great Andy Summers solo. A No.1 album in the UK, France and Australia, it featured two more signature hits for Messrs Sting, Summers, and Copeland, “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” and “De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da.” But alongside the nonsense lyrics of the latter, Sting was also contributing songs of social conscience such as “When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What’s Still Around,” “Driven To Tears,” and “Bombs Away.” DeRosa, Ed (8 February 2011). As American fans continued to catch up with the band’s catalog to that point, the Police’s first two albums would go on to their own, eventual, sales recognition. Outlandos D’Amour won platinum certification in the summer of 1984, more than five years after its chart debut. Outlandos D’Amour had to wait much longer, charting for the first time also in 1979 and turning platinum early in 2002. The album is the last of the Police's early era, influenced by reggae and punk and featuring few musical elements on top of the core guitar, bass, and drums.
