About this deal

Slouch Holligan - Rhetoric is asking a question without expecting an answer, because the answer is obvious in the question. Most importantly, buying into a future-proof system, where a more professional camera (like an X-T3) is not necessarily much larger and heavier.

If you shoot in low light/low contrast, you need a camera able to handle high ISO, if you shoot in fierce light and high contrast you probably need a camera with a huge dynamic range.People buy cars with manual transmission here because they prefer it over using an automatic transmission.

Nikon has done a great job with the D3500, not just when it was launched but in all the time since then. It's taken modest but effective technology, built it into a likeable and affordable camera and kept the price down low enough to make it affordable for beginners. At any one time, you might be able to find a cheaper interchangeable lens camera than this one, but we think you'll have a hard job finding one that's as good. I'd like to see them tested thoroughly. It isn't just beginners who buy this sort of thing but cash-strapped photographers who want something affordable and those looking for a cheap 2nd (or 3rd and so on) body and would like to know what the camera is capable of. I've seen some excellent images from the D3xxx cameras Not a Nikon user, btw., but would consider one of these as an 'interim measure' whilst deciding on future direction. I shoot wide and long focal lengths mostly, so I got myself primes in the wide end and in the long end. Eventually, I bought a couple in the 'normal' range, but that took some years. Picture Control modes can be directly accessed via a dedicated button and allow you to set predefined looks to imagery in-camera, and include Flat, Landscape, Monochrome, Neutral, Portrait, Standard, Vivid, and user-customizable settings. The D3500 does shoot raw files, as you’d expect, but these are 12-bit only, rather than the 14-bit raw files captured by models further up the Nikon range. Will you notice the difference? Probably not, as even a 12-bit raw gives a much wider tone and colour range than regular JPEGs, and for the users this camera is aimed at, the differences are likely to be academic. those folks claiming the D3500 is "crap" are more than the freak of the week, this is really jerko BS talk. One who can't make decent pictures with the D3500, can't make any good compositions with any camera, period. I have a VERY strong opinion about this. Any opposing opinions will be seen as existential threats resulting in an inflammation of my amygdala. Failing to validate my personal gear selections will be viewed as proof of the mental deficiencies of dissenters. Not much upgrade since the D3200, other than the battery life increment and connectivity options which i don't need.

NEF (RAW) 12 bit, Compressed JPEG JPEG-baseline Compliant with Fine (Approx 14), Normal (Approx 18), or Basic (Approx 116) Compression NEF (RAW) + JPEG Single Photograph Recorded in both NEF (RAW) and JPEG Formats In viewfinder shooting, the 11 AF points are clustered towards the middle of the frame, but if your subject is near the edge it’s easy enough to focus and then reframe before shooting. You can let the camera choose the focus point automatically or select it yourself; either way it’s very fast, and very positive.

Our lab tests show that the D3500’s image quality is very much on a par with its rivals. There are slight differences here and there in resolution, noise and dynamic range, but these show up more in lab tests than they do in real-world shooting. In practice, the D3500 delivers sharp, vibrant and very well exposed images, and the 18-55mm AF-P lens performs really well for an inexpensive kit lens, with consistent sharpness across the focal range and right to the edges of the frame. There is some colour fringing and distortion in its raw files, but if you enable the in-camera lens corrections you won’t see this in its JPEG images – and most photo-editors now apply in-built lens correction profiles to raw files. Boss of Sony: you are right that the battery life of a DSLR is betterr then the battery life of an mirrorless camera. But this comment is not about the differences between mirrorless and DSLR, this is about the differences between two models. Comparing these two the battery life went from 1200 (D3400) to 1500 (D3500) what is a good amount, but it is the one of the two feature that changed between these cameras. The other is the weight and size. The D3500 is 80 grams lighter and 0x1x6mm smaller.

It’s a shame, because video quality is excellent, and we like the range of frame-rate options, but without an easy way to manage exposures or incoming audio, the D3500’s appeal will always be limited despite its excellent image quality. Nikon D3500 review: Verdict

If this camera does the job for you for the next 10 years, why should you care about the rest of the world going mirrorless ?
