These gels are designed to cover the pill during swallowing, and lubricate its journey through the esophagus. Published evidence for the effectiveness of these is not yet available, but preliminary studies with a gel that is gaining extensive use in aged care facilities in Australia have shown no physicochemical interactions with the medications tested. 26 A device that applies a thin coating around the pill, giving a smoother and more slippery feel and masking the taste of medications, has been tested. 27 Forty out of 41 healthy participants with pill-swallowing difficulties reported improved pill swallowing using these pill coating devices, with 54% of them finding it “much easier” to swallow whole tablets. 27 The ingredients used in the medicine coatings are mainly from food sources, and the unpublished pharmacological evaluations have generally regarded them as safe in terms of interacting with medications. 27 Pill-swallowing cups have demonstrated positive effects anecdotally, but there isn’t much published clinical research about how effective they are.
Sometimes a pill is too large for a person to swallow, or they are simply unable to swallow any pill. When this happens, ask a doctor about an alternative. Depending on the drug, a doctor may recommend: One study of young adults and children showed that sprays such as Pill Glide had a significant effect in making pill-based medications easier to swallow. Simply open your mouth wide and apply the spray directly at the opening of your throat. Anxiety: If a person is afraid of taking pills or of choking, they may find swallowing tablets very difficult. Anxiety can reduce saliva production and cause muscle tension, making it harder to swallow a pill. It may also activate a person’s gag reflex, pushing the pill to the front of their mouth. Research
A group of researchers from the University of Heidelberg in Germany published a report in the Annals of Family Medicine. In it, they suggest that the “pop bottle” method can be very effective in swallowing a pill. Losing keys is a common problem, but having a set place to keep them may provide a solution. There are also electronic tags that can be attached to keys to help someone to find them when they have been mislaid within the home. The electronic tag is activated by pressing a button on a transmitter remote control, and will bleep.
Make sure you ask your pharmacist if it's okay to cut or grind a medication. Timed-release or enteric-coated medicines shouldn't be broken apart. It may also be possible to get your medicine in another form, such as a powder, cream, or liquid, so don't hesitate to ask. Some patients find it helpful to work up to swallowing pills by practicing with pill-sized pieces of soft bread or candy. Most of the time when you swallow, you don’t have to think about the reflexes at work. But when it comes to swallowing pills, you become suddenly all too aware of everything that goes into swallowing. The more you think about it, the more difficult it becomes. The globus sensation
