I’m sad that I can’t read my journals from that time, but I made up for it with my novel, Single Bald Female. With Telogen Effluvium more hairs than usual move into the telogen (resting) phase and shed, so you may notice more hair falling out than usual.

While Annabel may not have long left, she understands much more about living than anyone Jess has ever met. However, some people experience such rapid hair loss that patches are not seen before most of the scalp hair is lost. In Alopecia Areata, cells from the immune system (a specific type of T cell, known as NKG2D+ T cells) gather around the hair follicles. Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) is a type of Scarring Alopecia, where the hair follicle is destroyed and replaced with scar tissue. In some people, hair can fall out so fast that all the scalp hair is lost without any patches appearing. Primary scarring alopecias (also known as cicatricial alopecias or scarring hair loss) are a group of conditions that destroy the hair follicle, replace it with scar tissue, and cause permanent hair loss. My friends didn’t offer to shave their hair off in solidarity, and to be honest I didn’t expect them to.

Although cancer is the saddest of subjects, I peppered the novel with humour – I wanted it to be uplifting because no one wants to read a book that makes them cry from start to finish. However, in some people, hair loss can be accompanied by tingling, itching, burning, headaches or even pain in the skin. It is quite common for people with Alopecia Areata to experience hair loss on and off throughout their lives.As well as a specific set of genes, your environment also contributes to developing Alopecia Areata. But a shock diagnosis of breast cancer turns Jess’s world upside down, and her contented life implodes with it. Alopecia Areata Ophiasis can be more difficult to treat because it does not respond as quickly to medication.
