About this deal

It’s important to stress that all wines are different and it depends on the age and intensity of the wine.

El Esteco Don David Reserve Malbec | Vivino United Kingdom

A thick syrupy plum and blackberry jam hits the palate with an elegant finish complete with a little white pepper spice, cherries and chocolate. Winemakers who consider terroir and the impact it may have on their final wine, in my books, are approaching their winemaking on a more holistic level. The winery is located in San Pablo, where Salentein began its pioneering work, and nowadays is the largest producer.A sensational deep-red colour presents itself on pouring, with incredible notes of strawberry and cherry jam, stewed plums and a touch of clove. We’re talking about a big wine here, so you want to give it lots of breathing room to open up in the glass. Altamira is one of the highest and southernmost areas of the Uco Valley, almost a desert, where vineyards require irrigation from – usually – the melting snows from the Andes mountains to the west. Zuccardi wines elicit a “wow” – each time I crack open a bottle of Aluvional Altamira I get just that.

Don David Reserve Malbec 2017 Wine Review El Esteco Don David Reserve Malbec 2017 Wine Review

Dark chocolate and black fleshy plums on the nose and palate of this full-bodied Argentine red wine made from the country's classic Malbec grape. The fact that this Malbec is a blend of two different terroirs, simply enables the winemaker to add more depth to the wine. I have to say this really is a stunning wine and, to me, depicts the true essence of what a “mendoza malbec” is all about. Today’s article is no exception to that rule – so let’s continue to cut down the barriers of wine snobbery and help wine-lovers everywhere explore our wonderful world of the vine.Further flavours of blackcurrant, a bit of menthol and a subtle peppery spicy note accompanied smooth tannins and an uplifting, flavourful finish that lingered. From the Calingasta Valley about 1,500m altitude among the Andean peaks in the San Juan region comes a great value Malbec.

These elevations ensure a diverse variety of microclimates that, in addition to the different soil types, imbue unique expressions in the wines. I also detected a little bit of vanilla as well as a smokey, tobacco note from 9 months of oak ageing.Everything from the soil-type, seasonal rainfall, slope, aspect, climate, micro-climate, degree growing days, clonal grapevine selection etc…are all factors that directly affect the grapes which in turn directly impact the final wine. There’s a great backbone of black meadow fruits and brambles with a little earthiness and dry spice (white pepper) thrown into the mix. Terroir is the ‘je ne sais quoi’ of the wine world because it embodies everything that can’t quite be easily quantified, simply explained or definitively conclusive when describing a wine. We take care to make sure product details are correct but the information shown, including vegan and vegetarian suitability, ingredients, and alcohol by volume (ABV) may change.

Taking 53% malbec and 23% merlot with hints of cabernet sauvignon (12%), syrah (8%) and petit verdot (4%), there’s a really nice balance going on. Here we have something a little different; a Bordeaux-blend malbec equivalent from world-renowned winemaker Michel Rolland. A partnership between Enrique Foster and brilliant Argentinian oenologist Mauricio Lorca has produced this stupendous wine from the high-altitude vineyards of Luján de Cuyo in the Uco Valley of Mendoza. Bright acidity and silky tannin give a nicely balanced wine in a restrained style with integrated fruit, wood and structure and good length.

With crunchy mixed berries and vanilla essence and a hint of freshly-picked herbs, it develops across the palate with juicy fruit balanced by racy acidity, and with linen-textured tannins. Part of the Georges Vigouroux stable of Malbecs from Cahors, the Geron Dadine de Haute-Serre is a wonderful taste of this grape from its native home in France.
